Helical Stair Preliminary Renders

We have recently designed a large helical staircase for a client to go in their office. We are currently undergoing workshops with the design team to make sure the staircase is up to satisfaction before we proceed into fabrication.

3D visualisation really help to show how the staircase will look and gives the client a sneak peak of what they will receive prior to our installation. This particular stair has solid GRG clad balustrade with an offset stainless steel handrail. The design also includes an open soffit, exposing the underside of the treads giving the stair a unique touch.

Recently Completed Nepicar Staircases

We have recently completed these two stairs in a new office building in Kent.

Back in 2016 we were approached by the client to provide two staircases for their new office. We set up a design meeting and on site survey where ideas were talked through and proposals created. Once the style of stair had been selected we actually took the design team to one of our previously installed helical G-fin to see the staircase in real life. This was a great opportunity for them to see the fitted staircase up close and get a feel for the design. After seeing the staircase they were sold and we produced some simple 3D visualizations to show how the staircase would look in their reception area.

After a few small changes and alterations the design stage was completed and the job progressed into fabrication drawings and procurement of materials. Once these where delivered all the timber treads and landings were cut and sanded into shape and metal profiles where rolled, welded and polished and then the stairs were erected in our workshops before being dismantled and transported to site where they were installed by our skilled staff.

The main reception staircase is a helical G-fin with an inner stainless steel stringer, solid walnut treads and toughened glass balustrading on the outer. The second stair, a Levitate, was designed to match the G-fin using the same materials and finishes. Both the designs had our own HeLux LED lighting installed in the floor edge balustrade.

Helical and Spiral Staircases in Films

This week we have decided to gather a selection of helical staircases that feature in films.

The first film we have chosen is "Oblivion". The Stunning post-apocalyptic cinematics of this film are somewhat over shadowed by the futuristic helical staircase featured in the main characters suspended sky penthouse. If only Andrea Riseborough would move to the side.

b2ap3_thumbnail_oblivion-universal-pict10_20141009-142754_1.jpg

The next film Is "Inglorious Basterds". During the bloodbath scene in the basement of a French tavern, the audience can experience a moment of tranquillity as the moon light filters down through the stairwell, illuminating an elegant cast iron staircase.

b2ap3_thumbnail_untitled_20141009-142756_1.png

Our 3rd film is "Shutter Island". Officer Teddy Daniel's revaluation at the end isn't the only twist in this film, a multiple flight cast iron spiral adds a sinister vibe and some much needed character to this over complicated and tiresome adaptation of Dennis Lehane's novel.

Next we have the film "Alphaville". This is a 1965 Black and White French science fiction film set in the future. A secrete agent (Lemmy Caution) enters Alphaville on a series of missions. Undercover as a journalist he has to search for a missing agent, Capture and kill the creator of Alphaville and destroy the city and its dictatorial computer (Alpha 60).

b2ap3_thumbnail_cap245_resize_20141009-142813_1.jpg

Finally our last choice is "Alien 3". Ellen Ripley's escape pod crash lands on Fiorina 'Fury' 161, a prison planet inhabited by all-males inmates with the "double-Y" chromosomes patterns. The cast iron Staircase leads to the morgue where her deceased crew-members were being kept.

Iconic Staircases #03 - Musée du Louvre - I M Pei

This massive structure was designed as part of the glass pyramid extension by renowned architect I.M. Pei, which was completed in 1989. The huge self-supporting helical stairway travels through approximately 450 degrees and connects the ground floor with the new subterranean museum development below. The void left in the centre of the staircase was imaginatively used as an unenclosed lift.

Sneak Preview!

Here's a sneak preview of a project that is currently in the design stage. The staircase is to be the main feature for a large blue-chip communication company's new headquarters and is to be situated in one of the most distinguished office buildings in London's 'midtown' area.

The double-flight helical staircase is to include a solid 'monolithic' inner balustrade and toughened glass to the outer. Although some of the specification is still to be confirmed, the overall geometry is a great example of a large Part-M compliant office staircase which has two rest-landings per flight.

Iconic Staircases #02 - Itamaraty Palace - Oscar Niemeyer

I'm convinced that this is one of the most iconic staircases ever produced.

b2ap3_thumbnail_OscarNiemeyerstaircase_20141010-092101_1.jpg

This free-standing helical staircase constructed from reinforced concrete ticks all the boxes in staircase design. Graceful and technically inspiring, the stair was designed by Oscar Niemeyer as part of the Ministry-of-External-Relations in Brasilia which was constructed between 1960 and 1970.

BICE Restaurant, World Trade Centres, Bahrain

Design, Manufacture & Installation: Spiral Staircase Systems
Architect: MSCEB Architects & Engineers

This project is the feature staircase for the BICE Ristorante situated in the Bahrain World trade Centres.

3600mm in diameter and 3880mm from floor to floor, this impressive staircase was constructed in stainless steel with toughened curved glass panels and laminated glass treads. The full-height inner balustrade, outer stringer and helical handrails are completed with a satin polish finish.

With 1200mm clearwidth between handrails and a gentle 185mm rise, the proportions of this design make this a very comfortable staircase to use, one which will always provide a grand entrance to one of Bahrain's finest restaurants.
