Spiral's First Helical 3D print

Spiral are pleased to announce their first helical 3D staircase print.

This 1:20 scale model took 35 hours to print and was used to illustrated a unique full height stringer design.

Spiral's reputation is built on design and as technology advances, we find new ways of helping a client visualise their staircase. Some of these techniques include Photo Realistic Renders, 3D Printed Stairs and Augmented Reality.

Below are some renders and a 3d print for this project.

3D Printed Staircase No. 2 - Triple Flight Dog-Leg Stair

For our second 3D print we have printed a triple flight dog-leg stair at 1:40 scale. Printed in ABS on a Fortus 3D printer, each flight took around 20 hours to print and features 1.5mm handrail and 1.2mm glass panels. The whole model is mounted on transparent acrylic and stands around 40cm tall, with laser etched human profiles to give a sense of scale.

This model was printed on its side using the Fortus 250mc printer which uses FDM technology, printing horizontally reduces build time and helps make the small features stronger. This model was more complicated than our first 3D print and took over 60 hours to build.

This is the CAD model of the stair that was sent to the 3D printer and laser cutter.

Augmented Reality - 3D Staircase

Spiral Staircase Systems have this week been experimenting with Augmented reality.

The custom software uses a marker, in this case the company logo, to scale and augment a 3D staircase model using a tablet.

We are aiming to use this in the future to show potential clients how their staircase will look on site.

The good thing about this is you can either rotate the staircase or physically walk around the logo and see a full 360 degree view of the stair. We would like to add a control to change textures so clients can see how different materials and finishes would look in situ.

For this example we have used the staircase featured here in one of our previous posts.

b2ap3_thumbnail_20130927_152014_20141009-143135_1.jpg

Models can be viewed on laptops, smartphones and computers with a webcam.

The Apprentice - New Broad Street Staircase

The latest instalment in BBC's The Apprentice saw Sir Alan Sugar greet his prospective candidates from the steps of a Spiral Staircase Systems feature staircase. The staircase is situated in the atrium of New Broad Street House business centre in the City of London, and connects the reception with the lower ground floor level breakout area.

This substantial staircase incorporates 2 large stone plinth treads, a large tapering rest-landing which continues upwards to form a straight upper flight. Expansive cream stone treads were supported from painted mild steel stringers and toughened curved glass balustrade panels were finished with a satin polished stainless steel handrail.

Spiral Staircase Systems worked closely with RHWL Architects to produce this extremely spacious staircase that measures 1616mm between handrails at the smallest point! The size and prominent location ensure that this staircase is the focal point of the 7 floor atrium.

Paddington Office - Spiral Staircase

This feature spiral staircase is located in a events management office in Paddington, London.

It is constructed generally in mild steel, consisting of a central column with radiating folded steel treads supporting bright orange perforated balustrade panels. These are then capped off with a satin polished stainless steel handrail.

The following 3D concept renderings were produced during the design phase.

This staircase featured perforated mild steel balustrade panels which were completed in a bright orange powder coat finish. This gave the staircase an industrial but colourful look which blended in with the interior colour scheme.

SS 828 - The Manchester Call Centre

Here are a selection of completed images of an elliptical staircase designed, manufactured and installed in a telephone call centre for a Manchester based airline.

The stringers are slotted to accept curved toughened glass panels which are capped with matching 50mm diameter stainless steel handrails. The stone treads provide a contrasting nosing detail in compliance with Part-M Building Regulations. the underside of the stair is completed with a matching helical plaster soffit.

An extra feature is the surrounding elliptical floor edge balustrade, designed to match the specification of the stair with a stainless steel fascia and curved toughened glass.

Sneak Preview!

Here's a sneak preview of a project that is currently in the design stage. The staircase is to be the main feature for a large blue-chip communication company's new headquarters and is to be situated in one of the most distinguished office buildings in London's 'midtown' area.

The double-flight helical staircase is to include a solid 'monolithic' inner balustrade and toughened glass to the outer. Although some of the specification is still to be confirmed, the overall geometry is a great example of a large Part-M compliant office staircase which has two rest-landings per flight.

Bunhill Row - Completed Staircase

Presenting Spiral Staircase Systems latest completed commercial staircase situated in newly refurbished offices on Bunhill Row, London.

Spiral Staircase Systems have manufactured and installed this impressive feature staircase, problem free and within program. Since the initial renderings were produced, the project architect, Pringle Brandon, specified a stunning orange finish to the stepped soffit.

The high quality specification included a rectangular stainless steel handrail and Low-Iron, toughened glass panel balustrade. The steel staircase structure was clad in Black American Walnut and received a high gloss paint finish to the stepped soffit panels.

The final product is a stunning feature staircase that has become the main focus of the stylish office reception area.
