Helical Stair Preliminary Renders

We have recently designed a large helical staircase for a client to go in their office. We are currently undergoing workshops with the design team to make sure the staircase is up to satisfaction before we proceed into fabrication.

3D visualisation really help to show how the staircase will look and gives the client a sneak peak of what they will receive prior to our installation. This particular stair has solid GRG clad balustrade with an offset stainless steel handrail. The design also includes an open soffit, exposing the underside of the treads giving the stair a unique touch.

Spiral's First Helical 3D print

Spiral are pleased to announce their first helical 3D staircase print.

This 1:20 scale model took 35 hours to print and was used to illustrated a unique full height stringer design.

Spiral's reputation is built on design and as technology advances, we find new ways of helping a client visualise their staircase. Some of these techniques include Photo Realistic Renders, 3D Printed Stairs and Augmented Reality.

Below are some renders and a 3d print for this project.

3D Printed Staircase No. 2 - Triple Flight Dog-Leg Stair

For our second 3D print we have printed a triple flight dog-leg stair at 1:40 scale. Printed in ABS on a Fortus 3D printer, each flight took around 20 hours to print and features 1.5mm handrail and 1.2mm glass panels. The whole model is mounted on transparent acrylic and stands around 40cm tall, with laser etched human profiles to give a sense of scale.

This model was printed on its side using the Fortus 250mc printer which uses FDM technology, printing horizontally reduces build time and helps make the small features stronger. This model was more complicated than our first 3D print and took over 60 hours to build.

This is the CAD model of the stair that was sent to the 3D printer and laser cutter.

The DS Modular Staircase

The DS Range is a classic Spiral Stairs design and has remained popular for over 40 years.

The core of the stair features an aluminium bracket system that can be customised to achieve a desired finish, allowing it to really blend in to the home or workspace area.
The Balusters bring great rigidity to the structure, available in a wide range of designs and materials.

Lastly, choice of treads - (timber/acrylics) & handrails (timber/stainless steel/acrylic)

With the wide range of materials and paint / polish finishes that are available to us today, you really can create your own theme within this stair, to suit your application.

Examples of fitted stairs within DS Range we have built can be found on our website here:

DS2-270 White Ash/Polished Ali/Stainless Steel
DS2-183 Walnut & Stainless Steel
DS2-309 European Oak/Stainless Steel/Glass

Augmented Reality - 3D Staircase

Spiral Staircase Systems have this week been experimenting with Augmented reality.

The custom software uses a marker, in this case the company logo, to scale and augment a 3D staircase model using a tablet.

We are aiming to use this in the future to show potential clients how their staircase will look on site.

The good thing about this is you can either rotate the staircase or physically walk around the logo and see a full 360 degree view of the stair. We would like to add a control to change textures so clients can see how different materials and finishes would look in situ.

For this example we have used the staircase featured here in one of our previous posts.

b2ap3_thumbnail_20130927_152014_20141009-143135_1.jpg

Models can be viewed on laptops, smartphones and computers with a webcam.

Helical and Spiral Staircases in Films

This week we have decided to gather a selection of helical staircases that feature in films.

The first film we have chosen is "Oblivion". The Stunning post-apocalyptic cinematics of this film are somewhat over shadowed by the futuristic helical staircase featured in the main characters suspended sky penthouse. If only Andrea Riseborough would move to the side.

b2ap3_thumbnail_oblivion-universal-pict10_20141009-142754_1.jpg

The next film Is "Inglorious Basterds". During the bloodbath scene in the basement of a French tavern, the audience can experience a moment of tranquillity as the moon light filters down through the stairwell, illuminating an elegant cast iron staircase.

b2ap3_thumbnail_untitled_20141009-142756_1.png

Our 3rd film is "Shutter Island". Officer Teddy Daniel's revaluation at the end isn't the only twist in this film, a multiple flight cast iron spiral adds a sinister vibe and some much needed character to this over complicated and tiresome adaptation of Dennis Lehane's novel.

b2ap3_thumbnail_New_Deal_Leo_Stairs_Final_20141009-142751_1.jpg

Next we have the film "Alphaville". This is a 1965 Black and White French science fiction film set in the future. A secrete agent (Lemmy Caution) enters Alphaville on a series of missions. Undercover as a journalist he has to search for a missing agent, Capture and kill the creator of Alphaville and destroy the city and its dictatorial computer (Alpha 60).

b2ap3_thumbnail_cap245_resize_20141009-142813_1.jpg

Finally our last choice is "Alien 3". Ellen Ripley's escape pod crash lands on Fiorina 'Fury' 161, a prison planet inhabited by all-males inmates with the "double-Y" chromosomes patterns. The cast iron Staircase leads to the morgue where her deceased crew-members were being kept.

Spiral's First 3D Printed Staircase!

Spiral Staircase Systems are proud to announce their first 3D Printed Staircase!

The stair was printed at 1:40 on a ZPrinter 350 using a powder based material. The ZPrinter is a favourite amongst architects due to its fast print speed and relatively low material cost. The surrounding building was laser cut from MDF.

b2ap3_thumbnail_images01_20141009-142415_1.jpg

b2ap3_thumbnail_images02_20141009-142416_1.jpg

The 3D print can help us and the client better visualise the design of the stair. While renders provide a valuable insight into how a stair will look they do not provide an accurate sense of scale, which is one of the reasons why we see the technology as an important investment for the future.

b2ap3_thumbnail_images03_20141009-134915_1.jpg

As well as being 3D Printed, some preliminary renders have been produced for the project which is located in a central London office. The stair itself consists of polished concrete cladded treads and stringers, with glass balustrading and a stainless steel handrail.

Paddington Office - Spiral Staircase

This feature spiral staircase is located in a events management office in Paddington, London.

It is constructed generally in mild steel, consisting of a central column with radiating folded steel treads supporting bright orange perforated balustrade panels. These are then capped off with a satin polished stainless steel handrail.

The following 3D concept renderings were produced during the design phase.

This staircase featured perforated mild steel balustrade panels which were completed in a bright orange powder coat finish. This gave the staircase an industrial but colourful look which blended in with the interior colour scheme.

Sneak Preview!

Here's a sneak preview of a project that is currently in the design stage. The staircase is to be the main feature for a large blue-chip communication company's new headquarters and is to be situated in one of the most distinguished office buildings in London's 'midtown' area.

The double-flight helical staircase is to include a solid 'monolithic' inner balustrade and toughened glass to the outer. Although some of the specification is still to be confirmed, the overall geometry is a great example of a large Part-M compliant office staircase which has two rest-landings per flight.
